3 Tesla (3T) MRI at Radiology Associates of Ridgewood

Radiology Associates of Ridgewood is proud to introduce our latest investment in advanced imaging technology, the new GE 3 T MRI with extra large 70 cm gantry for improved scan experience. Beyond the widened bore and soft flexible coils the table surface has been completely redesigned to help alleviate pressure points for a more relaxed exam.

Doubling the strength of the MRI from 1.5 to 3 Tesla provides an increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) translating into faster imaging and improved spatial resolution. High field strength MRI can delineate tiny structures down to the micron level, smaller than the head of a pin. This includes small intricate anatomic structures such as small blood vessels and nerves. We have a powerful diagnostic tool that will become an essential weapon in the fight against cancer. Through the analysis of brain function combined with exquisite detailed mapping of anatomic structures, presurgical MRI studies can directly impact on the success of each surgical procedure. This can be accomplished through functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging to accurately localize specific areas of the brain responsible for language and motor skills and trace white matter tracts with relationship to brain abnormalities. The ability for us to communicate with our neuroscience team of physicians the extent of a brain tumor or to potentially locate a small area in the brain that is the cause for a seizure disorder is now more feasible than ever before. Treatment decisions are often based on our imaging studies which can be the difference between a patient offered a palliative versus curative therapy.

3 Tesla imaging outside of the brain and spine has also taken on a new and exciting level of precision facilitating accurate diagnosis. The higher SNR and increased spatial resolution at 3T helps enhance the detection of orthopedic abnormalities such as tears of the labral cartilage of the shoulder and hip, triangular fibrocartilage complex tears of the wrist, and various internal derangements of other bones and joints such as the knee and elbow.

MRI breast imaging, in conjunction with dynamic contrast enhancement, provides for improved detection and characterization of breast cancer. These benefits are potentially better appreciated with 3T MRI.

3T MRI can be an integral tool for the detection and localization of prostate cancer, without the need for an endorectal coil. This will allow direct biopsy of tumors rather than the random biopsies so often performed in patients with elevated PSA levels.

Evaluation of peripheral vascular disease is markedly improved at 3T, especially in those patients who are unable to receive contrast material.

It provides a particular advantage in imaging of small parts areas such as the wrists, hands, and feet. Similar improvements are seen across the breadth of brain and spine imaging. We are utilizing the 3T MRI for this purpose, as it produces high quality images without the need for an endorectal coil. Prostate MRI findings allow directed biopsy of tumors rather than the random biopsies so often performed in patients with elevated PSA levels.

An imaging sequence called MAVRIC is utilized on our 3 Tesla magnet to improve imaging of joints in patients that have had a joint replacement.

The new scanner provides a much improved patient scan experience. The 70 cm wide bore diminishes claustrophobia and allows scanning of larger patients. Soft flexible coils and a completely redesigned table surface help alleviate pressure points for a more relaxed examination.
